Studio 5: Project Book

Objective: Submit all work done on the senior capstone project during the quarter.

Project Overview - The Seed Farm

Client - The client is Out of Darkness, formed by a group of individuals who were seeking to end sex-trafficking in Atlanta. They run a round-the-clock hotline, rescue female sex trafficking victims and offer short-term safe places for the women to stay. They have set up a vibrant organization partnering successfully with the Atlanta community. They are an ideal client for this facility as they actually have the resources, information and experience to execute a long term recovery facility for victims of sex trafficking.

Design Problem - The Out of Darkness short-term rehabilitation center, The Solomon House, is running out of space for adult female victims and there is a great need for a facility for the adult female victims to stay for long-term recovery.

Design Solution - This design proposes the establishment of a long-term recovery facility, The Seed Farm, for female adult victims of sex-trafficking on farmland outside of the city of Atlanta to use nature to aid in the recovery process, while providing the women with opportunities to be part of a community, learn and experience empowerment. Three different building types will be utilized: The Seed Garden (retail/tea room), The Seed Orchard (administrative headquarters for Out of Darkness, The Seed Cottage (residential).

Design Concept - The overall design concept for The Seed Farm will focus on interior beauty, showing women how internal and external nourishment can allow the individual to blossom and transform.  With seeds as inspiration, the design will utilize layers, textures and transparency. The design will use the bright colors seen in detailed seed images as focal points and accents.

This project will fulfill an important need in the ministries associated with ending sex-trafficking. The long-term recovery facility will take the healing of the women a step further by providing them with a place to stay, a place to work and reintegrate them in society in a healthy way, giving them a new start in life.

Studio 5: Design Concept

Objective: Each student is to develop the brand and identity of her client and display a concept direction. The brand may be developed from scratch based on all of the previous research and work. The concepts should be appropriate, innovative and responsive to the brand developed for each client. Concepts should utilize the elements and principles of design that will be used and manifested throughout the spaces (Totten, Syllabus, 2013).

Studio 5: Programming

Objective: Each student is to address and develop space allocations and relationships based on all
of the components developed thus far for his/her particular facility and client. This should be presented on both a macro and micro level. The expected deliverable should be extremely detailed in regards to types of spaces, furniture, equipment, adjacency, and other appropriate criteria needed by the client. The format for all of this information needs to be considered as it relates to the overall project book and blog, which will be the final deliverables. Page size and orientation need to be consistent but also legible and easy to understand (Totten, Syllabus, 2013).

Introduction: The women’s rehabilitation center for sex trafficking victims will be located on what is currently called Hyde Farm in unincorporated Cobb County. The center will consist of three building types: the Tea Room, the Administrative Center and the Residences. This infographic will explore the programmatic problem and the proposed programming for each of the different building types, focusing on prototypicals for select spaces and Adjacency Diagrams that outline relationships and criteria for each of the buildings. Design Drivers and Goals are also considered as an important part of the design process.
