Studio 5: Building Feasibility & Code Compliance Analysis

Objective:In the process of developing a workable building program, designers must understand
the constraints of the existing building. The overall volume available and code restrictions inherent in any existing construction will affect what can be achieved within a structure. It is important to understand this at the beginning in order not to waste time coming up with solutions that are infeasible or in violation of code. Students will carry out a building study as an extension of their site analysis in order to better inform their final space allocation charts and final programming.

Studio 5: Building and Site Analysis

Objective: Both the building and specific site are vital elements to consider during the programming
phase of design. The location can significantly impact decisions when you are evaluating programmatic requirements, as well as the building’s orientation on its site. Existing building conditions also provide a constraint on programmatic requirements in regards to what the building selected will and won’t allow (Totten, Syllabus, 2013).

Studio 5: Precedent Analysis

Objective: To learn from previous projects to inform programming and design choices. The strengths and weaknesses of each project should be considered. Conduct a precedent study of three facilities that are directly related to the proposed project (Totten, Syllabus, 2013).

Studio 5: Project Proposal

Objective: The Capstone Project for the BFA in Interior Design represents the culmination of all the
skills learned throughout the undergraduate education. It is a design solution supported by appropriate and complex design inquiry. The Capstone Project is developed within a context of intentions, understanding goals, questions, and ideas. The Project Proposal must make these ideas clear. It must also set the plan for engaging those ideas through design. The project is to be of a significance intended for the advancement of the field of interior design. The analysis and refinement of concepts for the project is to be communicated by written, oral and graphic skills and demonstrated through application in the development of a design. The parameters of the Capstone Project proposed should be appropriate in size, complexity, and scope commensurate with design skills for BFA students. Possible facility types could include healthcare, hospitality, retail, museums, libraries, educational facilities, government/civic buildings, corporate offices, large-scale residential complexes, or mixed-use facilities. While the proposed project may be larger in area, the maximum square footage to be designed for this project is to be 12,500 sq. ft. Students must work within this parameter as well as identify and locate a building footprint appropriate for their project proposed (Totten, Syllabus, 2013).
